Lily & Georgia Dennett's 1st Blog for The Highland Dancer

Sister Blog for The Highland Dancer

By Lily & Georgia Dennett from Helensburgh

A little bit about us…

We are Lily (age 9) and Georgia Dennett (age 7) from Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. We are part of the Margaret Rose School of Dance. It’s Lily typing here…

Which dance pumps do you wear?
Currently we love our new Thistle pumps that Shirley, at a lovely wee dance shop in Alexandria called En Pointe, fits for us. We love going there as she also has Mad Mia socks! Even though we are sisters and look alike, we have totally different shaped feet, so I like Highland Gold and Georgia likes the Glenalmond ones.

Favourite dance?
We both love to dance the Seann Truibhas. I like it because it was the first new dance I learned as a beginner. We really love learning the Strathspey and Reel just now for our trip to Canada next year!

What dance do you struggle with?
Neither of us like the swords, it’s so tricky not to touch them! But we are working hard to get better.

What are your goals for competitions coming up?
I am a novice dancer and Georgia is a beginner. This year was Georgia’s first time at Cowal and she won a medal – 6th place for her Seann Truibhas. This was my third Cowal. I won a medal for my reel when I was a beginner but no places the last two years. It’s still a great experience, and we love having our names on the Hoody and supporting all our other dance friends. We are going to Aberdeen at the end of the month, so are working hard so that we can maybe win a few more medals. One day we would love to win a trophy. But as long as we dance our best (and I point my toes!) I know Margaret will be happy and we will be happy too.

Who is the dancer you look up to?
We have so many superstars dancers in our Dance School to look up to. So many to mention, but obviously the Gammons girls (Catriona and Eilidh) as they are dance sisters too!

Favourite competition?
We travel about all over for competitions, but we love going to Renfrewshire Festivals at Boggleston. I think because we have been going there since we I was 4 it’s very familiar and we always dance well there.

Where is the most interesting place you have danced?
Definitely Hawaii! Margaret takes a group of dancers every year. There is a highland games where we dance but our favourite part was we got to dance at the memorial for Princess Kaʻiulani (1875-1899). She was the last Hawaiian princess and her dad was Scottish (from Edinburgh) – it was a great honour for us the other dancers! We both danced as beginners in the competition and I got my last stamp so that I could move up to novice.

What tartan do you wear?
I wear Special Dress Royal Menzies, and Georgia wears Dress Green Cunningham. Mum had to get her a green kilt because she didn’t want to wear my old Pink Raspberry Scott!

Do you have any other hobbies?
We both go to Brownies, I play the guitar and Georgia plays the Fiddle, we also dance Ballet/Tap/Hip-Hop/Cheer and are in a choir! We are very busy!

We are so excited to be new Brand Ambassadors for the Highland Dancer please stop us and say hello if you see us out and about.
