My Oban Experience
Alice Newlands, Bowan School, Dundee
Hi everyone, my name is Alice and I’m an Ambassador for The Highland Dancer. This is my first blog, and I would like to tell you all about my Oban experience this year. I know it was a few weeks ago, but since then I’ve been really busy with dance class, practice, and other competitions.
We stayed at Tralee Bay and when I wasn’t dancing or practicing, I had a lot of fun playing with my dancing friends and exploring the beach - although the water was freezing cold 🥶.
On the first night of the festival I was lucky to be part of the 12 yrs choreography team made up of dancers from my school, Lesley Bowman, and dancers from Loraine Waddell and Fiona Gallacher’s dance schools. We were called Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Blue Roses and being on that big stage was such an enjoyable experience being with new friends who enjoy performing as much as I do. We were all so nervous waiting for the results and so so excited to win first place!
The next day I took part in the Scottish Area Finals as first representative for Dundee and Angus in the Juvenile section of the competition. I was so delighted to come fifth overall when competing against so many talented dancers in the group. I like learning about the planets and astronomy, and my dad said if I managed to come sixth he would arrange a trip to Mars for me 😂. Maybe for coming fifth I’ll get to go to the moon!
Next day I competed in the 9 yrs premier competition and managed to win overall highland which made me very happy too.
After three days of dancing, I could finally go to my most favourite place - The Oban Chocolate Company - where my dancing friends and I stuffed ourselves so much we could hardly move! When we returned to Tralee Bay I had a great time playing outdoors with my friends and had a very late night! I was sorry to leave Oban on Monday as I had had such a fantastic time dancing and having fun with friends old and new. I hope I get the opportunity to compete at Oban again next year as it was an experience I’ll never forget 😊xxx
