The Markinch Competitions

The Markinch monthly Highland Dancing competitions are something of an institution, having been running for forty years. They are always held on the fourth Saturday of the month (even if there are five) in September, October, November, January and February, and culminate with the Markinch Annual Competition in April.

For the monthlies you can enter before the event or simply turn up and enter on the day if you like. Entries for the annual must be pre-paid and received by the preceding Thursday (no phone or email entries). To pre-enter, simply download the relevant entry form (see below) from this page, print it, fill it in and send it in with your entry money. (It’s slightly cheaper that way!) Competing fees are still being held at £1.20 per dance for pre-paid entries and £1.50 per dance for entries paid on the day.

Note that entries for the Markinch Monthlies by email are much preferred to telephone entries, and should include the dancer''s name, age (at the date of competition), which section (Primary, Beginner, etc.), your home town and the name of your dance school. Also, if you''re not entering for all dances in the section, indicate which ones you are entering for.

At the monthlies dancing starts at 12:30pm and we’re usually done by around 4:00pm. At the annual in April dancing starts with Primary, Beginner and Novice grades at 10:30am, and they are usually done by around 1:00pm. For Intermediate and Premier, dancing commences around 1:00pm (once the other grades are done) and is usually complete by about 4:30pm.

Parking is a bit limited, being mainly street parking, although there is a small school car park just opposite, which is open for free public parking at weekends. The address is Markinch Town Hall, Betson Street, Markinch, KY7 6AA.

We run a small shop where you can buy light refreshments, cakes, biscuits, cold drinks, tea, coffee, etc., staffed by our stalwart band of willing volunteer helpers, to whom we shall be eternally grateful.

At the door you will usually be greeted by Nancy Stewart, who will gladly sell you your entry ticket. Entry at the door is £2.00 for adults and £1.50 for OAPs and non-competing children.
