Hello world
Do you set goals for yourself for dance competitions?
Do you get upset or frustrated when you don’t meet those/goals?
Two weeks ago, I travelled to London, Ontario to compete in the pre-champs and the Amethyst Premiership.
I knew the premiership would be tough, however I badly wanted to do well in the pre-champs.
In the end, I didn’t do as well as I wanted or hoped. I felt defeated with the results.
Same with the premiership.
It took a week or so to move on from that feeling. Looking back, I have to remember that I am doing well.
I have to remember I started doing highland at an older age, older than most competitors are now.
Starting something at an older age is harder.
I also am still able to compete after a significant injury 4 years ago and I’m still nursing a sore Achilles.
We often put so much pressure on ourselves and forget to look at the positives.
Sure it’s great to win a competition but there’s more to dancing than that.
I’ve made so many amazing friends by simply being connecting to highland dancing.
I’ve also had the opportunity to travel and compete in many different places.
Moving forward, I need to get back into the habit of setting myself mini goals for each dance, such as making sure I keep my supporting foot turned out.
I’m also going to enjoy what I do and not focus on results.
Dancing is so much more than that.
So next time you have a competition, be kind to yourself and enjoy the moment.
