From Highland Dance to Happy Tartan: The Evolution of a Brand
There’s something magical about tartan. It’s woven with history, pride, and movement — and for me, that movement started with Highland dance.
For years, I was immersed in the world of Highland dancing — the discipline, the pageantry, the poise. It taught me rhythm, strength, and grace. But more than that, it taught me how culture lives and breathes through tradition. And that’s where the seed for Happy Tartan® was quietly planted.
I didn’t know it then, but the bold patterns of my kilt and the stomp of my ghillies on the dance floor were early sparks of what would later grow into a colourful, creative brand. One that still respects its roots but isn’t afraid to spin around, laugh loudly, and throw a peace sign for the camera.
🎨 The Shift: From Stage to Studio
Happy Tartan was never meant to be serious. It’s cheeky, bright, and full of life — just like the kids wearing it. What started as a nod to traditional Highland wear evolved into something playful and unexpected: a fashion brand where tartan dances differently.
Instead of reels and flings, we now play with camera angles and poses. Our "stage" is a makeshift studio corner. Our "steps" are now struts, spins, and giggles. But the energy — that powerful Highland energy — is still there. You can see it in every photo and cartoon twist.

Happy Tartan was created to bring joy. To celebrate the vibrancy of Scotland’s spirit in a modern, inclusive way. It's about creating pieces that feel bold and youthful — but still deeply connected to our roots. It’s not about doing tartan “the right way” — it’s about doing it our way.

Our young models aren’t professionals — they’re just brilliant kids with personality bursting out of them. They spin, jump, pout, pose, and transform. Then, in true Happy Tartan style, we turn them into cartoon characters — because why not? That’s the energy we love.
These shoots are full of chaos and colour, just like childhood should be.
